This Week: We begin today’s melodic extravaganza with three movie melodies by Ukrainian born composer Dmitri Tiomkin (born May 10, 1894), then we begin out countdown of the Top 25 tunes composed in 1924, a century ago, as measured by the number of “cover” recordings of those tunes made in the last century. This is also a tale of emerging composers in that year: George Gershwin, Irving Berlin (born May 11, 1888), Isham Jones, and others. We close the first hour with three selections by Gordon Goodwin’s “Big Phat Band.” The 4:00 hour features a magic marriage of talent between composer Irving Berlin and dancer/singer/actor and Austrian-American, Fred Astaire (born Friedrich Austerlitz, May 10, 1899) in a half-dozen films from the 1930s and 1940s. Starting at 4:50, we begin our second (of five) hours in May profiling the five decades of Duke Ellington’s marvelously creative career, this time ranging from 1936 to 1944 (the Big Band Era), encompassing 10 of Duke’s 15 most recorded hits.
