Thank you, Lopez, for a great Hummel Lake WorkPARTY!
Apr 28, 2024
By Kwiaht
Over a dozen Lopezians celebrated Earth Day by helping clear away more brush and debris from the Hummel Lake boat ramp area. You can see the difference it’s made! At least one more work party will be organized next month to complete the clean-up and replanting.
Nathan Hodges has prepared a draft landscaping and replanting plan that includes a picnic area; a trail to provide safe access for pedestrians and bicycles from Hummel Lake Road; and greater shoreline access for fishing, bird watching and lake views. Options for a marked safe-swimming zone are under discussion. Please comment and share suggestions for the final plan!

Beth St. George will lead more bird walks this summer. Also being planned: a bass-fishing derby and a safe-boating instruction day. This year’s Bat Night at the lake will be August 19 when a full moon rises just after sunset.

A new dock box has been installed to store “loaner” life jackets, and new interpretive signs will soon be posted. (Sadly, someone removed the memorial sign from the kiosk before we could move it to the new dock box. If you find it, please return it as soon as possible!)

A reminder that state law requires that all canoes, kayaks and other watercraft left on this state land be marked with the owner’s name and phone number. Unmarked boats may be removed by the state’s maintenance crew the next time they come through.
